The Royal Pump Room, Harrogate

The Royal Pump Room used to dispense Harrogate's spa water. The mineral water is highly sulphurous and smells - and no doubt tasted - disgusting. You can't try it now. A recent EU directive found it unfit for human consumption! The Pump Room is now a museum with displays related to the history of the area.

  1. I know this is SO cliché, but they just don't build 'em like that anymore! What a gorgeous building.

  2. I think I have to come and drink some glasses, maybe I could reach 110 and enter in the Guiness Book ??

  3. It's a beautiful structure. There are many sulfur springs in West Virginia near where my wife grew up, and even the local municipal water system tastes strongly of sulfur. But one gets used to it in a few days and it has the secondary benefit of being a mild laxative, no doubt one of the health benefits promoted by these 19th century spas.

  4. Lovely. We have Saratoga Springs of mineral water. And bath houses sort of like Bath, UK.

  5. Unfit for human consumption. That is so amazing what people would do and believe in to make themselves feel better. It is a wonderfully designed building.

  6. The building is a beauty. Sulfurous water doesn't sound like my drink of choice.
